If you're reading this, chances are you're about to embark on—or are considering—your City & Guilds Functional Skills in English qualification. Let me tell you something: you’ve got this! I recently completed mine through Lifetime Learning as part of my Customer Service Specialist Level 3 apprenticeship, and I can confidently say that while the journey had its challenges, it was absolutely worth it.
This blog post is not just about my experience—it's also a guide to help you navigate your own journey with confidence and motivation.
Why I Took the City & Guilds Functional Skills in English Qualification:
For many apprentices, obtaining a Functional Skills qualification is a key stepping stone toward career progression. In my case, I knew that strong reading, writing, and verbal communication skills would help me both professionally and personally. Whether it's drafting clear emails, engaging in meaningful conversations, or analyzing important documents, English skills are essential in any career.
The Learning Process: What Worked Well:
Studying with Lifetime Learning made a significant difference in my journey. Here’s what I found helpful:
✅ Structured Learning: The course was well-organized, making it easier to break down different aspects of English—reading comprehension, writing structure, and speaking & listening.
✅ Supportive Tutors: Whenever I had questions, the tutors were always there to provide clear explanations and constructive feedback.
✅ Practical Focus: The course wasn’t just about memorizing grammar rules—it was about applying English skills in real-life workplace situations.
✅ Gradual Confidence Boost: As I progressed, I started noticing how my communication skills improved. I became more clear, concise, and confident in my writing and speaking.
Facing Challenges Head-On:
No journey is without its obstacles, and mine was no exception. One major challenge I faced was having to reschedule my exam due to an unexpected cancellation.
I had originally booked my remote exam, but on the day, the examiner was overly sensitive to the invigilation setup and canceled the test. It was frustrating, no doubt. I had mentally prepared myself, only to be told I had to wait even longer. But here’s the thing: setbacks don’t define you—your response to them does. Instead of feeling discouraged, I used the extra time to refine my writing skills, practice my reading comprehension, and mentally prepare for the next attempt.
How I Felt Throughout the Journey
➡️ Excited: At the beginning, I was eager to take on this challenge and improve my skills.
➡️ Frustrated: When my exam got canceled, I felt momentarily defeated, but I refused to let it stop me.
➡️ Determined: I stayed focused and kept preparing, knowing that my goal was within reach.
➡️ Proud & Accomplished: When I finally passed, the sense of achievement was unmatched.
My Advice to Future Learners:
If you’re about to take on this qualification, here are a few words of encouragement from someone who’s been in your shoes:
✔️ Stay Consistent: Even if you only study a little each day, keep going. Progress adds up.
✔️ Ask for Help When Needed: Whether it’s a tutor, a friend, or online resources—you’re not alone.
✔️ Prepare for the Unexpected: If something doesn’t go as planned (like my exam rescheduling), adapt and keep moving forward.
✔️ Believe in Yourself: No matter how tough it gets, you are capable of succeeding.
Final Thoughts: You Can Do This!
Completing my #City & Guilds Functional Skills in English qualification was a powerful reminder that challenges exist not to stop us, but to push us toward growth. Whether you're struggling with writing, worried about speaking assessments, or facing unexpected setbacks, just keep going.
