Back in June 2019, I took a captivating journey through one of Nigeria’s educational and ecological treasures — the Kenneth Dike Library and Zoological Garden located within the prestigious University of Ile-Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University), Oyo State.

Combining the intellect of a great academic archive with the wild vibrancy of a living zoo, this experience was both mentally refreshing and soul-nourishing.

📚 Kenneth Dike Library – A Temple of Knowledge

The Kenneth Dike Library, named after Nigeria’s first indigenous university librarian, stands as a monument of academic excellence. Within its walls are thousands of volumes that span African history, literature, science, and culture — a true paradise for knowledge seekers.

Walking through its halls, I was transported into an archive of national consciousness — from colonial records to modern policy journals. It was more than a library; it was a living museum of Nigerian intellect.

🦁 Into the Wild: The University Zoo

Just a short walk away lies the zoological garden, an ecosystem buzzing with life and natural diversity. Here's what I encountered:

• 🦁 Lions – Majestic and alert, these kings of the jungle rested with dignity.
• 🦴 Hyenas – Fierce yet fascinating, they brought a raw edge to the animal section.
• 🫏 Donkeys – Gentle creatures symbolic of patience and resilience.
• 🕊️ Birds – A variety of species chirping in harmony with nature.
• 🐟 Fishes – Serene and hypnotic, they brought calm to the aquatic sections.

The zoo is not just entertainment — it's a platform for conservation, education, and youth engagement. For students, families, and tourists alike, this corner of Ile-Ife remains a quiet sanctuary of wonder.

In April 2017, I stood before the majestic Oranmiyan Staff — a 5-meter granite monolith, said to be the spear of Oranmiyan, the legendary warrior and king whose lineage runs deep through Yoruba royalty. Being in its shadow reminded me that our courage and heritage stand taller than time itself.

💦 Olumirin Waterfall (Erin Ijesha) — Seven Steps of Wonder

Later that same April, I journeyed to the mystical Olumirin Waterfall, known locally as Erin Ijesha. This seven-level waterfall, discovered centuries ago by a hunter from Ile-Ife, is nature’s reminder that true beauty unfolds in steps — each tier a baptism of refreshing mist and timeless folklore.

🏹 Moremi Staff — Echoes of a Queen’s Sacrifice

My exploration would not be complete without paying homage to Queen Moremi Ajasoro. Her bravery saved the Ife people from invaders, and her legacy lives on through the Moremi Staff. Standing before it, I felt the echo of her selfless spirit — a story every Nigerian child should grow up knowing.
