π’ Amsterdam by Cruise: Sylvia & Emily's Honest Experience – The Good, The Bad and What Future Cruisers Should Know
There is something rather special about beginning a holiday before you have even reached the destination.
Instead of boarding a plane, fastening your seatbelt and waiting to land, a cruise makes the journey itself part of the adventure.
That was the experience awaiting my girlfriend, Sylvia, and her friend Emily, when they embarked on a cruise to Amsterdam in September 2026.
It promised a European city break with a difference: comfortable surroundings, meals, entertainment, life at sea and eventually the opportunity to experience Amsterdam.
And in many ways, the trip delivered.
But it also taught them an important lesson: the advertised cruise fare is not necessarily the end of what you may spend onboard.
So rather than writing another article that simply says, "The cruise was amazing!", this Dee3Concepts feature takes a more useful approach.
What did Sylvia and Emily genuinely enjoy? What disappointed them? What unexpected costs stood out? And what should somebody considering their first cruise know before stepping aboard?

⚓ The Adventure Begins
For Sylvia and Emily, boarding the ship brought that wonderful feeling every traveller knows: the moment months of planning finally become reality.
There were cabins and decks to discover, restaurants to investigate, entertainment to look forward to and, somewhere beyond the horizon, Amsterdam waiting for them.
Their overall experience was positive. However, as the journey progressed, they also discovered several aspects of cruising they felt could have been handled better.
And that is where their experience becomes particularly useful for anyone planning a future cruise.
❤️ What Sylvia & Emily Loved About the Cruise
1. π️ Comfortable and Attractive Surroundings
One of their positive first impressions was the ship's interior.
They found the dΓ©cor attractive and the surroundings comfortable, helping create the feeling that the holiday had begun from the moment they came aboard.
On a cruise, the ship becomes your hotel, restaurant, entertainment venue and transport all at once, so comfortable communal spaces can make a considerable difference to the overall experience.
2. π Lovely and Courteous Staff
A beautiful ship means little without good people running it.
Sylvia and Emily spoke positively about the members of staff they encountered, describing them as lovely and courteous.
That matters.
Whether someone is serving dinner, answering a question or helping a passenger find their way around, good service can transform an ordinary trip into a memorable one.
3. π Interesting and "Edutaining"
One word that captures their experience particularly well is edutaining — entertaining while also offering opportunities to learn and discover.
A cruise is not merely transportation from A to B. For first-time passengers especially, simply discovering how a large passenger ship operates can become part of the experience.
4. π½️ Good Food
Food can make or break a holiday, and thankfully this went into the positive column.
Sylvia and Emily enjoyed the meals available during their trip.
Being able to sit down for a good meal without having to leave your floating hotel is one of cruising's obvious pleasures.
5. π Great Entertainment
When the ship is at sea, the destination cannot do the entertaining for you.
That's why onboard entertainment matters so much.
This was another part of the experience they enjoyed. The entertainment helped give the evenings energy and provided something to look forward to after the day's activities.
π€ What Didn't Work So Well?
This is where the story becomes particularly useful for future travellers.
None of the following necessarily means someone should avoid cruising. Instead, these were aspects Sylvia and Emily felt passengers should understand before booking — and areas where they believe the customer experience could be improved.
1. π³ Keeping Track of Onboard Spending Wasn't Easy
Perhaps their biggest practical concern was keeping track of expenses.
Cruise spending can feel different from spending on land. A drink here, an additional service there, Wi-Fi, water or another onboard purchase may individually seem small.
Together, however, additional purchases can accumulate.
Sylvia and Emily felt passengers would benefit from a clearer, continuously updated view of their onboard expenditure.
Dee3Concepts tip: Before travelling, find out how your cruise line displays onboard spending. If an app or cabin-account system is available, check it regularly rather than waiting until the end of the voyage.
2. π The Pool Felt Too Small
They were also surprised by the size of the swimming pool relative to the number of people sharing the ship.
Their expectation had been that such an important leisure facility would provide considerably more room for passengers.
This is worth considering if swimming and poolside relaxation are important parts of your ideal holiday.
Before booking any cruise, look beyond photographs of the ship itself and research the facilities you personally expect to use.
3. πΉ Drinks Felt Expensive
Another disappointment was the price of drinks onboard.
This is an important budgeting lesson for first-time cruisers: never assume every drink is included simply because meals or other parts of the cruise are included in your fare.
Before booking, investigate what your fare actually covers and whether drinks packages are available. Then compare the package price with how much you realistically expect to drink.
4. πΆ Internet Access Was a Significant Extra Cost
This was one of the biggest frustrations.
For modern travellers, internet access is no longer just about scrolling through social media.
Passengers may need to contact family, check travel arrangements, access bookings, work remotely or simply share photographs from their journey.
Sylvia and Emily felt the onboard internet cost was very high and would have preferred basic Wi-Fi to be included as part of the cruise experience.
Travel tip: Check your cruise operator's current Wi-Fi packages before departure. When the ship is in port, your normal mobile roaming arrangements may be different, so check your network's terms before using mobile data abroad.
5. πΊ Limited Television Choice
Television may not sound particularly important when you're going on an adventure — until you want a quiet evening in your cabin.
Sylvia and Emily felt there wasn't enough variety in the television channels available.
More news, entertainment, film and international options could make cabin downtime considerably more enjoyable.
6. π§ Paying for Bottled Water
One of their biggest surprises involved bottled water.
They had expected complimentary bottled water to be included, but the bottles they encountered attracted an additional charge.
Whether bottled water is included varies between cruise fares, packages and operators, so this is another detail worth checking before sailing.
For Sylvia and Emily, providing at least some complimentary drinking water in the cabin would have made the experience feel more hospitable.
π° The Lesson: Understand the Real Cost of Your Cruise
Perhaps the most valuable lesson from their experience is simple:
Don't budget only for the cruise ticket.
Before booking, investigate potential additional costs such as:
- πΉ Drinks and drinks packages
- πΆ Wi-Fi or internet packages
- π§ Bottled water
- π½️ Speciality dining
- π Shore excursions
- π Spa treatments
- π️ Onboard shopping
- π· Service charges or gratuities, where applicable
- π Transport and spending at the destination
Not every cruise line charges for all of these, and some fares or packages include more than others.
The important thing is to know before you sail.
π³️ Five Improvements Sylvia & Emily Would Like Cruise Operators to Consider
1. A Clear Real-Time Spending Dashboard
Passengers should be able to see an easy-to-understand, automatically updated breakdown of their onboard expenditure throughout the journey.
A clear dashboard showing purchases, packages, remaining credit and total expenditure would make budgeting considerably easier.
2. Basic Wi-Fi Included
They would like cruise operators to consider including a basic level of internet access within the standard fare, with faster or premium packages available for passengers who need them.
That could provide basic connectivity without eliminating an operator's ability to offer premium internet services.
3. Complimentary Drinking Water
Providing complimentary bottled water — or convenient refillable drinking-water facilities — would be a relatively small touch that could make passengers feel better looked after.
4. Better Management of Family Capacity
During busy family sailings, the number and mix of passengers can affect how crowded leisure areas feel.
Rather than simply focusing on the number of children, a useful approach for operators could be ensuring that family capacity is balanced with the ship's available pools, children's facilities, entertainment venues and communal spaces.
5. More In-Cabin Entertainment
Greater television choice, on-demand entertainment or easy access to different news and entertainment channels could improve those quieter periods passengers spend in their cabins.
π First-Time Cruise Checklist: Questions to Ask Before You Book
Sylvia and Emily's experience gives future cruisers a very useful checklist.
- What food and restaurants are included in my fare?
- Which drinks are complimentary?
- Is bottled or refillable drinking water provided?
- How much does Wi-Fi cost?
- Can I monitor my onboard spending in real time?
- Are gratuities or service charges included?
- Which entertainment activities cost extra?
- How large are the pools and leisure facilities?
- Is the sailing particularly family-focused or adult-focused?
- What happens if I need to cancel or change the booking?
- What travel insurance and European health cover should I arrange?
- What roaming charges might apply when I reach the destination?
Getting those answers before paying can prevent an attractive headline fare from becoming a much more expensive holiday than expected.
π³π± And Then There Was Amsterdam...
Of course, the ship was only one half of this adventure.
The journey also brought Sylvia and Emily to Amsterdam — adding the excitement of a European city experience to life onboard.
That's one of cruising's great attractions: you unpack your suitcase once, but the journey can carry you somewhere completely different.
For travellers who dislike airports or simply want the journey itself to become part of their holiday, cruising from the UK can be an appealing way to experience Europe.
⭐ Sylvia & Emily's Overall Verdict
Would they cruise again?
Potentially, yes — but next time with considerably more research beforehand.
The positives were genuine: lovely staff, comfortable surroundings, enjoyable food, good entertainment and an interesting overall experience.
The frustrations were equally useful lessons: additional costs can change how a cruise feels, particularly when it comes to drinks, internet access and seemingly small purchases.
Their next cruise therefore won't simply be about finding an attractive destination.
They'll be comparing what is actually included.
And that may be the single most useful piece of advice for anyone reading this:
Don't choose your next cruise by destination and headline price alone. Compare the complete experience.
π Where Next?
After Amsterdam, Sylvia and Emily are already thinking about another European destination.
But there will be no rushing the decision this time.
The next trip will involve comparing ships, destinations, facilities, Wi-Fi, drinks, onboard inclusions and the likely total cost — not simply the initial fare.
And when that next adventure happens, Dee3Concepts will be sharing the story.
